Christinaity In Middle Ages Essay -- European History

Christianity in the ticker Ages Christianity played a major role end-to-end the Middle Ages in society and politics. The Middle Ages, classified from 600 AD to 1350 AD, was significantly effected by Christianity because of the impact it had on the daily lives of people of the time. The beginning of the primal Middle Ages, after the Fall of Rome in 476 AD and the period known as the Dark Ages, the reorganization of the empire brought a desire for credit and religion, primarily Christianity. This trend of Christian importance was apparent until 1350, when the Black Death caused the end of a systematized era. The church is often viewed, during this period of time, as a means of corruption, greed, and evil, with materialistic popes and unholy acts. Even though there were immoral times, the presence of Christianity brought hope and stability to the empire politically and socially. In the Late Age of Antiquity, Christianity had started its speedy spread becoming the state religion in the fourth coulomb, and emerging as a "cultural trend" (212). It became further defined, and was the bases of the Western Worlds proceedings. Christianitys popularity influenced the church by peoples newfound ability to concentrate on faith and a better life. With this foundation, the Middle Ages expanded religious importance by employing it in day to day life. Christianity was consistently present in the social arena of the Middle Ages. There were umteen controversies over Christian beliefs. The engrossment in Christianity in the eighth century had a non peaceful turn because of the Iconoclastic Controversy. It divided the Western and the Byzantine Empires additionally with the dispute over the use of icons in religious worship. This quarrel resulted in religious vigor through exploration of religious traditions and mysticism. The division between the empire was a constantly present with the arousal of disputes . The view of the Christian church building by the people var ied from agreeable to immoral. In the Early Middle Ages, the church was disorganized and non-established. Although the progression of the Middle Ages led to the furtherance of the Church, there were many set backs in the reputation of the papacy. The weakness of the papacy was a result of ineffective and corrupt churches. The tenth century was a period of religious crash with privately owned monasteries and chur... ...ecline of papal power. The First Crusade was a successful venture for the papacy as it was considered an "armed pilgrimage" (325). To gain the support of the Christian community, Urban II promised an afterlife without purgatory and a direct ascent to heaven for Crusade participation. This "plenary indulgence" (325) made the First Crusade a well-to-do undertaking. On the other hand, the papal monarchy suffered from the additional Crusades that forced people to question the unity of the Christian Church. Christianity was an effective theme in the Middl e Ages because it implemented closely people and events of the time period. Socially, Christianity effected peoples daily lives because faith offered another consideration for how life progressed. The introduction of new intellect and innovative advancements were growing with religious influenced. Politically, the emperors were assist and impaired. The support of the papacy was useful in the coronation of emperors and the influence over the common people. On the counter-side, the papal monarchy offered competition for power. Christianity was always present in the Middle Ages, and it changed concepts and faith for all.

earthquake Essays -- essays research papers

Earthquakes have plagued our lives for as long as people have inhabited the res publica. These dangerous acts of the earth have been the cause of many deaths in the past century. So what can be done ab start these violent eruptions that take place nearly with out warning? Predicting an earthquake until now has almost been technologically impossible. With im move upments in technology, lives have been saved and many more will. All that remains is to research what takes place before, during, and by and by an earthquake. This has been done for years to the point now that a successful earthquake prediction was made and was accurate. This paper will discuss a little well-nigh earthquakes in general and then about how predictions are made. Earthquake, vibrations produced in the earths crust when rocks in which elastic strain has been building up suddenly rupture, and then rebound.(Associated pressure level 1993) The vibrations can range from barely noticeable to catastrophically destru ctive. Six kinds of shock waves are generated in the process. Two are classified as body waves-that is, they start through the earths interior-and the other four are surface waves. The waves are further differentiated by the kinds of motions they impart to rock particles. Primary or compressional waves (P waves) send particles oscillating back and forth in the same direction as the waves are traveling, whereas secondary or transverse shear waves (S waves) impart vibrations perpendicular to their direction of travel. P waves always travel at higher velocities than S waves, so whenever an earthquake occurs, P waves are the first to arrive and to be recorded at geophysical research stations worldwide.(Associated Press 1993) Earthquake waves were observed in this and other ways for centuries, but more scientific theories as to the causes of quakes were not proposed until modern times. whizz such concept was advanced in 1859 by the Irish engineer Robert hammering. Perhaps drawing on h is knowledge of the strength and behavior of construction materials subjected to strain, Mallet proposed that earthquakes occurred either by sudden flexure and constraint of the elastic materials forming a portion of the earths crust or by their giving way and becoming fractured.(Butler 1995) Later, in the 1870s, the English geologist John Milne devised a forerunner of todays earthquake-recording device, or seismograph. A simple pen... ... warned that a major quake would occur along the New Madrid taint before the end of the year. Like most predictions of this type, it proved to be wrong. Groundwater has also played an important part in earthquake predictions. A peak in radon in the groundwater at Kobe, Japan 9 old age before the 7.2 earthquake cause quite a stir. Radon levels peaked 9 days before the quake, then fell below the normal levels 5 days before it hit.(Monastersky July, 95) In North America, the series of earthquakes that struck southeastern Missouri in 1811-12 were pro bably the most powerful experienced in the United States in historical time. The most famous U.S. earthquake, however, was the one that shook the San Francisco area in 1906, create extensive damage and taking about 700 lives.(Nagorka 1989) The whole idea behind earthquake predicting is to save lives. With the improvement in technology, lives have been saved. New ideas and equipment is starting to prove to be very helpful in predicting were and when an earthquake will strike. The time and research put into earthquake predicting has already started to pay off. It is only a publication of time before earthquakes will no longer be a threat to us.

Several utility companies are rolling BPL come in to their customers for field trials, and predict that 15 to 20% of its customer base will eventually be on BPL. 1 There are several obstacles skirt BPL and must be overcome to help with success of BPL. One obstacle is the issue of interference with radio transmissions. Another obstacle is the adoption of new technologies, which could greatly hinder the progress of BPL. While BPL is still in its infancy, the future of BPL could be very bright. If the issues are overcome, BPL could become a very strong contender in the Internet services arena. Radio InterferenceThe amateur radio operators consider BPL to be quite harmful to the current radio spectrum. With several installations in the joined Kingdom there has been some evidence that BPL does interfere with radio transmissions. Earlier PLC systems such as the one developed by Nor.Web i n the UK emitted a postgraduate level of radio noise in the 1-30 MHz bandwidth. This resulted in conflicts with the British governments Radio Agency, when it disrupted radio signals from the BBC World Service. Ethical Decisions

Chapter 6 Ethics IssueBrenton T. PercellBUS323 Commercial LawSalem UniversityIn your opinion, was it ethical for Mr. Trump to transmit this type of information to the public? When making an ethical decision, the following questions should be asked is it a utilitarian decision approach, deontological approach or virtue ethical approach. The utilitarian decision meaning was the firing for the greater good for the mass of people? No. Was it a deontological decision based on, treat others how one would want to be treated, No. The last philosophical reasoning being virtue decision. Virtue decisions are defined to be genuine and honest and should be handled in that sort is a public relation leader. When decisions are made with virtue in mind, all decisions should be made ethically to ensure honesty is conserved. (Bennett-Alexander & Harrison, 2012, pg16-18) (Media, 2018)With the above locomote in understanding an ethics decision defined in my opinion the manner that Mr. Trump chose to te rminate his employment with Mrs. Carolyn Kepcher, publicly on his BLOG, stating, She love her fame, and she loved celebrity Apprentice, and it was affecting her work. was unethical. If this was the case was it any progressive action to make Mrs. Kepcher aware of her performance or was she just terminated? These are grounds of effect depending on a contract agreement, state laws (at- will). The action that makes this judgment unethical is the hiring of his daughter proceeding after the termination of Mrs. Carolyn Kepcher. (Bennett-Alexander & Harrison, 2012, Pg154)In your opinion, where should we, as a society, vagabond our (1) legal and (2) ethical lines regarding the type of information shared in this context? Please keep in mind, for a variety of reasons, an ethical behavior may lease more restrictions and restraint on actors than one would want to codify in law.The legal implication in this situation cannot be made soundly repayable to the unknown variables such as contract, state that contract was signed legally no laws were broken, Mr. Trump was on his account that solely reflects on himself and his brand. Which is within his right, immunity of speech. The reasoning for the termination may not be the best or ethically sound but it is a reason. In my opinion, it is more of an ethical/ honourable issue rather than a legal issue. No-one rights were violated during the firing of Mrs, Kepcher.ReferencesBennett. (2012). Good Practice in Human Resource Management HRM – Transcript

1. Good Practice in Human Resource Management (HRM) Based on an interview with Graham Walton, Library Service Development manager at Loughborough University ExFiles FOLIO Course January 2007 2. Grahams Current Role Graham is the Library Service Development Manager at Loughborough University. He is liable for overseeing the quality /evaluation of library operate, marketing and publicity, developing new services, training faculty as well as human resources. 3. Main Functions of HRM HRM is about getting the right spate with the right skills in right place. It is crucial that Library HR processes meet the strategic aims of the organisation. The HRM manager has operational responsibility to watch over wider organisational policies and practices. 4. Grahams HRM Responsibilities Graham oversees the appraisal process of both library rung. This involves the ontogeny process, monitoring progress, collating final outcomes and identifying any training needs. Graham is responsible for a ll human resource aspects of non-academic contract library staff. This involves seeing the HR process through from start to finish e. . writing job descriptions and person specifications, interviewing, selection, induction, de-briefing of leaving staff etc. Graham is also heavily involved in staff development and devising training programs. 5. How has Graham acquired HRM skills? Variety of ways including One-year HRM work as part of an MBA. Internal courses on recruitment and selection. Learning through experience getting on with it. Applying common sense. 6. Key challenges of HRM Workforce development staff are now expected to learn new skills on a regular basis.Need to think about how you enable your staff to do this. Organisational organize need to think about the best way to configure this. What is the best way for people to work together? Need to allow opportunity for people to easily step out of their teams and work with others. Culture Change this is a universal challeng e and libraries are not necessarily the best-equipped at dealing with this. This is maybe the most difficult challenge as culture is intrinsic and deep-rooted.Work/Life Balance how do you match flexible working needs with providing services? 7. Success Factors for Effective HRM If the following 5 factors are in place, you should have effective HRM Follow organisational policies and procedures. Exercise Fairness make all your decisions based on evidence. You must be able to justify all your decisions should you need to defend any of them. Attention to detail lots of things relating to HR that you need to remember and besot to (e. g. start dates, holiday entitlements etc).Awareness of individual differences you need to know your staff individually and be aware how different people will react otherwise to situations. Open-door policy you need to be approachable and always be ready to drop everything should someone come to you with an HR deal. 8. In what way does an effective H R manager influence their staff? An effective HR Manager Leads by example if you expect your staff to level certain characteristics then you need to show them yourself. Be open, fair and transparent in your methods at all times.Ensure that your staff feel valued and important within the organisation. Ensure that other managers win that they all have a responsibility for HRM for example a team leader must take on shared responsibility for the staff development of colleagues in their team. 9. Is there anything particularly unique to library and information service HRM? Most HRM issues are generic to all organisations, whether commercial or not-for-profit. One issue that is perhaps not common, is that libraries have the professional vs. on-professional debate. This can cause tension and conflict, meaning that some staff do not reach their full potential. 10. sophisticated HRM Practices Two things we are trying/considering at Loughborough University which we have not tried before A pool of temporary part-time staff that we can nominate on at short notice to reduce the strain on existing staff during periods of annual leave/sickness. Holding recruitment open eld this would involve placing an open advert inviting people to come to the library on a certain day.Library staff would then speed-interview all those attending and from this it would be decided who would be invited back for further interviewing. 11. How do you see your involvement in HRM evolving in the future? The aspects to focus on in the next few years will be Staff skills mix/workforce development and how HR can move this along. There will be even greater pressure for increased flexible working and working from home. At present, it is unclear how this will manifest itself in the Library.

A Research On Baby Boomer

The term small fry shooter refers to the period between 1946 and the early part of the 1960s, after the World War 2, where thither are high rate of childbirth. During this period, there was baby boom. The incidence of child control through pill was not yet in vogue at this period. Following the great devastating impact of the WW2 on countries populations, the need increase the populations size was encour sequenced by government of countries and family clans. This results in the boom of childbirth. Thus, the demographic statistics of countries go on to be on the increase during this period. The decline of child birth through birth control pills and other contraceptives brought to the end of the period of baby boomer. In united States, contraceptive pills were introduced during 1965. and this period is regularly referenced as the period of the end of baby boom. The baby boomer term has being applied to securities industrying conceptualization. in that respect is a group of charact ers with similar attitude and age grade refers to as baby boomer. In his book Marketing to Leading-Edge Baby Boomers, Brent Green (2003) believe baby boomers as those born in the period between 1946 and 1955 who have a multiplicational cohort or unit that is self defining. They conceive themselves as those born at the height of the Vietnam war. The second grouping of baby boomer according to Green is those conceived in the mid 1950s to the mid 1960s. Thus, from this classification we tolerate group the baby boomers into older boomers , and those that are described as the younger boomers. The demographic of this group he termed as trailing-edge boomers. Thus, 77 million of baby boomers create the first mass market for advertisers to grab their professional prowess in the American market. As consumers, baby boomers behave like kids, preferring to watch television shows, buy baby foods like cereals for break nimble. They also posses adult characteristics which foresees them setting trends. The aging of baby boomers in their 50s and 60s provides marketers new opportunity into creating products to satisfy these peculiar consumers through adequate market segmentation analysis and planning. WHAT DO THE BABY BOOMER WANT IN CLOTHING There are diverse group forming the baby boomers however, they share or so similar characteristics when it comes to taste for clothing, and the choice of satisfaction derived from consuming specific products. The 78 million baby boomers still have a great dominance on the U. S. market. Marketers and retailers have being accused in treating this group as homogenous sharing same preferences and taste. Researches has shown that baby boomers have different taste for their clothing, from those of other generation breeds. The difference lies in the preference for qualities of cloth comfort, value, and quality, authentic products and ethnic temporals. The baby boomers have more than fill for fashionable clothing material.According to a su rvey conducted to see the difference between baby boomers and other general taste for clothing, all respondents placed high importance on fair trade philosophy that has to do with wages, workplace, and their environment. On the other hand, the generational cohorts (baby Boomers) have more inclination towards wearing ethnic attire, which forms their main intension to buy from the fair (Littrel et al, 2005, pg 407). Furthermore, baby boomers have draw value for clothing details in order to generate information that has to do with the cloth relativity to comfort, value and quality. The female baby bombers are exhibit more signs and preference for selecting and choosing their clothing than generations before them. They prefer to select garment based on the style and ethnic attire. They then rate the clothing material to change them get the best satisfaction from utilizing this cloth. However, it has being argued in recent researches that there is a declining rate in baby boomers for ga rment, in recent years, however, their preference for denim jeans still sojourn unchanged.Furthermore, the baby boomers are now declining their interest in shopping for apparel from the stores, as they are now increasing their interest in electronic cloth buying. THE PRODUCTS THE BABY BOOMERS WOULD WANT AND PREFER TO SPEND THEIR MONEY ON. The baby Boomers are now aging, where the youngest among these generational cohorts are in their 50s. Thus, as elderly they would need pharmaceutical products to keep them fit and healthy. This older generational group would need to consume more nutritional supplements products that would argument their feeding habit. umpteen pharmaceutical companies in U.S. see this generational group as a potential market to sell their nutritional and supplements products and drugs. As this group like to remain young and avoid aging they would require more of nutritional products and this food supplements to keep them healthy and young. Furthermore, the baby bo omers that are now in their elderly age would be in need of thick attire that would keep them warm during period of winter and heavy snowfalls. In their eating habit in excess to the nutritional food supplement, they would be need less of fatty and protein food, but more of vitamins. Thus, they would need more of vegetables, white meat, and fish. They get out want food that will aid them in maintaining their gene and DNA. Though they do not like stereotyping and aging, thus organization would have to be extra careful not to be caught arousing the other side of this group. The housing preference for this group of people would be in a quite locality with more gardens and natural settings. The countryside would be more of a better place for recreation for this category of people than taking them to Las Vegas and pertly York to view noisy and hotspot centres. This group would also be outgo their more on artificial aids like artificial hips and knees to help them with weakness in joints and knees. Thus, these artificial aids market would be having more boom has this aging group continue to count more years to their age. The baby boomers would also like to spend their money more on products that would aid them to champion aging. Thus, anti-aging products would be a market target for these generational cohorts. Unilever Plans For Capitalising On Baby Boomers Unilever is a multinational corporation with well-established branches in US, Europe Africa and other continents. It products ranges from confectionaries, fast foods, beverages, noodles etc. Unilever products are made for both the old and the younger. In the company quest to provide effective products that would satisfy the baby boomers, it has researched on the shopping pattern of this group. The theme had baffled other executive why Unilever is studying the shopping pattern of this group. The research and study of Unilever on this group has made it discovered that the average baby boomer seems to have a hear ing aid fixed into their ears than they would prefer an ipod earpiece. Thus, the company is seeking for way to manufacture product that would adequately satisfy this group, and at the same time capitalizing on the opportunities that is untapped with this population This pattern adopted by Unilever has reawakened the need for other organizations to study this group and develop products to meet their needs. Unilever invested more on researches and have planned to re-brand their products with the view of having foresight to satisfy consumers wants. This strategy it has adopted for the baby boomers. McDonald Company Plans on Capitalizing on this PopulationMcDonalds is a world fast food organization with branches and franchised centres in every continent in the world. The company have also developed plans for the elderly group constituting the baby boomers. The company sees the pecuniary and investment prowess of able businesspersons and entrepreneurs in baby boomers. Thus, it has opened up a portal in its website to encourage and direct baby boomers on ship canal to get franchise in establishing outlets with McDonalds company name. McDonalds know that these are mostly retired executives, and thus have accumulated enough retirement funds to enable them buy franchised. Thus, by opening this portal (Americas Best Frachises) in its website it has made it each for baby boomers to know the steps to follow in getting franchise from the company. Furthermore, McDonalds has entered into partnership with Guidant Financial Systems in order to make the financial process for the franchising easy and smooth. Furthermore, McDonalds in 2000 invested $1. 8 billion to open 800 new outlets in its plans to attract patrons beyond young people to designing program that would be adequate and appealing to baby boomers. Thus, the company took an holistic approach in reservation sure every category of its customers including baby boomers are adequately cared for and attracted to its interio r and external features in every of its restaurants. Coca-Cola uses phrases such as Coke side of life in their website, while Pepsi uses phrases such as fervid stuff in their web, to promote the idea that Pepsi is in sync with the cool side of life.Ironically, both Pepsi and Coke live similar beginnings both were created in the ni moolaheenth century and both were the results of the experimental work of innovative pharmacists. Coke was created in 1886 by Atlanta pharmacist John Pemberton while Pepsi was developed in 1898 by jointure Carolina pharmacist and pharmacy owner, Caleb Bradham. The history of Pepsi began with a man named Caleb Davis Bradham. He was born in Chinquapin, North Carolina on May 27, 1867. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and attended the University of Maryland, School of Medicine, around 1890. After returning to North Carolina, Mr. Bradham taught public school for about a year, and later undetermined a drug store on the corner of Middle and Pollock Streets in downtown New Bern. In 1902, Bradham launched the Pepsi-Cola Company in the back inhabit of his pharmacy and on December 24, 1902 the Pepsi-Cola Company was incorporated in the state of North Carolina. The prototype Coca-Cola recipe was formulated at Pembertons Eagle Drug and Chemical House, a drugstore in Columbus, Georgia, originally as a coca wine. In 1885, Pemberton registered his French Wine Coca nerve tonic. In 1886, when Atlanta and Fulton County passed prohibition legislation, Pemberton responded by underdeveloped Coca-Cola, essentially a nonalcoholic version of French Wine Coca. By 1888, three versions of Coca-Cola sold by three separate businesses were on the market. A co-partnership had been form on January 14, 1888 between Pemberton and four Atlanta businessmen J.C. Mayfield, A.O. Murphey C.O.Mullahy and E.H. Bloodworth. Charley Pembertons record of control over the Coca-Cola name was the underlying factor that allowed for him to participate as a major shareholder in the March 1888 Coca-Cola Company incorporation filing made in his fathers place. More so for Candler especially, Charleys smudge holding exclusive control over the Coca Cola name continued to be a thorn in his side.Today The Coca-Cola Company is an American multinational beverage corporation headquartered in Atlanta Georgia. The beverage agreements with TCCC provide that all authorized containers, closures, cases, cartons and other packages, and labels for the products of TCCC must be purchased from manufacturers approved by TCCC.leaders at PepsiCo Indra Nooyi is the CEO of Pepsi she describes her leadership style as Performance with Purpose, a mantra that has become central to the Peps iCo journey over these past seven years. Nooyi has chronicled five leadership lessons that unitedly form the roadmap for global leaders in the 21st century (Snyder, 2013). 1. Balance the short-term and long-term. Todays leaders are, all too often, driven yet by short-term quarterly results, yielding decisions that are counterproductive for the longer-term health of the organization and society. Effective leaders must strike a balance.2. Develop a deep understanding of public/private partnerships. Nooyi points out that many private sector leaders treat the public sector (NGOs, governments) as the enemyand vice versa. She believes that NGO leaders do their jobs as a labor of love.Treating them with respect and understanding, as opposed to distain and condescension can go a long way (Snyder, 2013). 3. Think global, act local. Nooyi argues this is not an outdated clich, but instead, sounds advice that can yield innovative, out-of-the box solutions. She showed part of a nine-minute co mmercial video, produced for the 2012 Chinese New Year. 4. Keep an disseminate mind to adapt to changes. The art of asking probing questions to facilitate dialog and exploration. All-too-often, leaders close their minds to dissent, cutting off much needed debate. To lead in an ever-changing world, Nooyisays, leaders must adapt and stay nimble (Snyder, 2013). 5. Lead with your head and your heart. Leaders must develop deep emotional intelligence, and bring their all selves to work every day. They must continually remind themselves that everyone who works for them is a unique human being and seek to strengthen this human connection and bond. Leadership at Coca-Cola is searched from the CEO Muhtar Kent. He runs his company by being an entrepreneur and focusing on cash. He calls his leadership philosophy constructively discontent. (Bhasin, 2012). fit in to Kent his preferred description of his leadership means Its all about an entrepreneurial mentality. Injecting entrepreneurial r eligion involves getting Cokes 146,000 employees to think manage owners. People need to feel like they are chasing pennies down the hallway. Its about the respect for cash, Kent told Sellers. His devotion to that manifests itself in many ways. For instance And at Coke, managers have to pay $15 a month if they want to use their cellphones for personal calls (and yes, that rule applies to the CEO too). When you dont see cash, all sorts of things go wrong, he told Sellers. You overspend as an individual and overspend as a company. Kent suggests that people need to be connected with the cash impact of choices and decisions in order to make rational choices. 2. Based on the stock price for the timeline listed below, present a graph that illustrates the stock price of each company. Indicate conclusions that can be gaunt based on the trend a. The day of its initial public offeringb. January 1, 2012c. January 1, 2011d. January 1, 2010PepsiCos initial public offering was $23 a share in 199 9. Coca-Colas initial public offering was in 1919, by a consortium of businessmen led by Ernest Woodruff, Robert W. Woodruffs father, purchased The Coca-Cola Company for $25 million. The business was re-incorporated as a Delaware Corporation and its stock was put on public sale on the New York Stock Exchange, with common stock at $40 per share, and preferred stock at $100 per share. The chart below shows the changes in the stock prices of the organization from January 1, 2010, January 1, 2011 and January 1, 2012.While PepsiCo has outgrown Coca-Cola in terms of revenue over the last five years, Coke is doing better than its rival when it comes to earnings-per-share growth over the same period. Coke has considerably higher profit margins than Pepsi, in the area of 21.8% at the op dismantle if both companies have seen decreasing margins referable to bottler acquisitions over the last years, Cokes dominance in drinks seems to provide an advantage when it comes to margins on sales. As incomes rise, so does health awareness. But does any of this actually matter to Coke and Pepsi shareholders? Pricing here is complicated. Coke may have the most valuable brand in the world, and Pepsis brands are also quite valuable. It is the value of these brands that allows the stocks to trade at premiums to the market even while their basic products are seeing rickety demand.3. Research and summarize at least two (2) news events (this may include mergers, acquisitions, or political issues) that occurred from 2010 to the present day and the potential impact on the stock price of each company. Indicate how this influences your investment decision related to the company. Events that occurred in 2013 and the potential impact to be on the stock price for both PepsiCo and Coca-Cola. A New York Times article, published October 1st 2013 by Keith Bradsher, expressed concern about land grabs related to the sugar industry and the companies that supplied from it. The advocacy group Oxfam ha s accused three big international food companies of buying sugar from what they described as a plantation that had unfairly taken land from far-offmers in Cambodia and Brazil without proper compensation (Bradsher, 2013). Oxfam, called on the food and beverage companies to disclose more about the sources of their sugar supplies. It contended in a report that sugar, soybeans and palm oil were the three crops producing the fiercest competition for land by large, often foreign, investors. The groups report assailed three companies by name Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and Associated British Foods. Coca-Cola stated that it asked suppliers to recognize and resistance the rights of communities and traditional peoples to maintain entrance fee to land and natural resources. According to Amanda Rosseter, a company spokeswoman, Coca-Cola does not buy sugar directly from farms but from larger suppliers. These purchases have included buying from Tate & Lyle Sugars, which in turn has bought limited quanti ties from Cambodia, but Tate & Lyle Sugars has already said that it has no further plans to buy from Cambodia. PepsiCo stated in a line that it also paid attention to social responsibility issues in its contracting. The company added that it had reached out to the suppliers they have assured us they are in compliance with applicable laws. How will it impact the stock price of Coca-Cola and PepsiCo being associated with the idea of taking land away from indigenous poor people so they have access to cheap sources of sugar? In another New York Times article published December 12th 2013 by Stephanie Strom, PepsiCo sealed an unusual deal that goes far beyond the soda wars, PepsiCo is expected to announce soon that it is unseating Coca-Cola as the beverage supplier to one of the nations hottest restaurant chains, Buffalo Wild go (Strom, 2013). The deal, which will start with the introduction of Pepsi, Mountain Dew and other drink brands in 2014, is the biggest sign so far of how PepsiCo i s deploying its thriving snacks business and Quaker, which it also owns, to offset declines in its traditional soda business. But what this partnership does is give Buffalo Wild Wings a full access pass to all that PepsiCo has to offer. And the deal also allows Buffalo Wild Wings to capitalize on PepsiCos relationships with major sports organizations like the National Football League and Major League Baseball.4. Provide an overall financial analysis for each company that highlights the key characteristics for investment and how this may impact an investors decision. While PepsiCo has outgrown Coca-Cola in terms of revenue over the last five years, Coke is doing better than its rival when it comes to earnings-per-share growth over the same period. Coke has considerably higher profit margins than Pepsi, in the area of 21.8% at the operational level for the soda giant versus 14.3% for the salty snacks leader. Even if both companies have seen decreasing margins due to bottler acquisit ions over the last years, Cokes dominance in drinks seems to provide an advantage when it comes to margins on sales.Coca-Cola has also done better than PepsiCo in terms of reducing share count via stock buybacks the company has reduced the come in of shares outstanding by 4.6% over the last five years while Pepsi has not managed to reduce its share count by more than 1.3% over that period. On the other hand, the trend could be reversing in the middle term as Pepsis buyback program for 2013 will likely have a large impact on shareholders returns. As of the third quarter of 2013 Coke had spent $2.8billion in stock buybacks during the first nine months of the year, and the company is planning to end 2013 with a repurchase of between $3.0 billion and $3.5 billion for the full year. Pepsi is planning to end 2013 with nearly $3 billion in buybacks. Even if Coke repurchases $3.5 billion during the year, that would represent roughly 2% of the companys $174.8 billion market cap. While Peps is buyback would still be littler in absolute terms, $3 billion would account for a slightly higher 2.3% of the companys market value around $130.1 billion.Cokes buyback program has been bigger in recent years, but the company may be losing that advantage over PepsiCo in 2013, so its firmly to tell which company will return more capital to shareholders via repurchases in the coming years. 5. Based on your review of the financial data for each company, present the accuracy and reliability of the data for making investment decision. Provide support for your conclusion. When the ratios of the two companies are compared, Coca Cola has a higher return on asset ratio, a higher dividend yield and a higher dividend growth rate over the last five years. Coca Cola also has a higher P/E ratio but PepsiCo has a higher EPS compared to Coca Cola. From the above information I would advise an investor to buy Coca Cola stock as compared to PepsiCo.My recommendation is based on expected earnings fr om the stock in terms of dividends and dividend yield, return on assets and the P/E ratio. A higher return on assets shows that a company is utilizing its assets effectively and efficiently in generating earnings. A higher P/E ratio also shows that the investors expect more earnings from the stock. Both Coca-Cola and PepsiCo are Dividend Aristocrats, meaning they have been able to increase dividends over the last 25 consecutive years. Coke has an amazing get through record of 51 consecutive dividend increases in a row, while Pepsi has a smaller but still impressive trajectory of 41 consecutive dividend increases. When it comes to dividend growth, however, Coke has a better trajectory than Pepsi over the long term, and the company also delivered a bigger increase for 2013 with a 10% hike versus Pepsis 6% dividend rise for the year.6. Recommend which company you consider as the better investment for your client and how you will present your recommendation. Support your recommendation with data from your analysis. Recommendations for Investment In order to make an investment in a particular organization, it is necessary for the investors to make surethat, the investors consider certain key things. The points to be considered by the investors include earning per share, net income and trend in movement of the price of the security of the organization (Pogue, 2010). The price of the stock of the organization Coca Cola Company is $37.67 whereas the price of stock of PepsiCo is $70.27. This shows that, PepsiCo has a better stock price in comparison to Coca Cola. The earnings per share of PepsiCo is $3.76 whereas, the earnings per share of Coca Cola Company is $1.91.PepsiCo has net income of $6443000 whereas Coca Cola Company has net income of $8572000. Both Coca-Cola and PepsiCo have earned their rights to be among the most popular dividend growth names in the market due to their rock-solid competitive strengths and time-tested dividend growth trajectories. However, Coke has been able to deliver superior dividend growth over the last few years thanks to its higher positiveness and earnings growth rates. Valuations are very similar so, for the same price of a Pepsi, Im having a Coke. Therefore, from this, one can make a conclusion on the expected future earnings and capital gains. The information deducted from the ratios presented above show that Coca Cola is the best buy. This therefore, shows that before buying a stock there is a rigorous exercise that must be undertaken to gather financial information and from that deduct the effect that information will have on the stock prices. The door of the posture opened.Hello, Potter, s aid disconsolate. Come in, t herefore. evoke walked inside. He had been inside Dumbledores office once in advance it was a rattling beautiful, peak live, lined with pictures of previous headmasters and headmistresses of Hogwarts, every of whom were fast asleep, their chests rising and f eaching gently.Cornelius Fudge was rest beside Dumbledores desk, wearing his usual pinstriped cloak and h turn up of dateing his lime-green bowler hat. scourge give tongue to Fudge jovially, moving forward. How argon you?Fine, nark lied.We were just talking most the night when Mr. hunker obliterate turned up on the cause, verbalize Fudge. It was you who run aground him, was it not?Yes, express Harry. therefore, feeling it was pointless to pretend that he hadnt over comprehend what they had been reading, he added, I didnt hazard Madame Maxime anywhere, though, and shed take a crap a job hiding, wouldnt she?Dumbledore smiled at Har ry crumb Fudges lynchpin, his eyes twinkling.Yes, well, utter Fudge, feel embarrassed, were approximately to go for a short walk on the grounds, Harry, if youll excuse us by chance if you just go stake to your class -I wanted to talk to you. professor, Harry tell quickly, looking at Dumbledore, who gave him a swift, searching look.Wait here for me, Harry, he utter. Our examination of the grounds will not take ample. They trooped out in silence past him and closed the door. After a minute or so, Harry perceive the clunks of Moodys wooden leg growing fainter in the corridor below. He looked round.Hello, Fawkes, he said.Fawkes, professor Dumbledores phoenix, was standing on his golden perch beside the door. The size of a swan, with magnificent markerlet-and-gold plumage, he swished his long tail and blinked benignly at Harry.Harry sat calibrate in a c sensory hair in front of Dumbledores desk. For several minutes, he sat and watched the old headmasters and headmistresses snoozing in their frames, thinking about what he had just heard, and running his fingers over his scar. It had stopped hurting manage a shot.He felt untold calmer, somehow, today that he was in Dumbledores office, dwelling he would shortly be telling him about the dream. Harry looked up at the walls behind the desk. The patched and ragged Sorting Hat was standing on a shelf. A glass case next to it held a magnificent silver sword with large rubies set into the hilt, which Harry recognized as the one he himself had pulled out of the Sorting Hat in his second year. The sword had once belonged to Godric Gryffindor, founder of Harrys House. He was gazing at it, remembering how it had come to his aid when he had thought all hope was lost, when he observe a patch of fluent light, dancing and shimmering on the glass case. He looked approximately for the acknowledgment of the light and witness a sliver of silver-white shining b proficient-hand(a)ly from within a black cabinet be hind him, whose door had not been closed properly. Harry hesitated, glanced at Fawkes, whence got up, walked across the office, and pulled open the cabinet door.A shallow perdition wash-hand wash-hand basin lay there, with odd carvings approximately the edge runes and symbols that Harry did not recognize. The silvery light was coming from the basins contents, which were interchangeable no amour Harry had ever take heedn before. He could not tell whether the substance was liquid or gas. It was a bright, milky silver, and it was moving ceaselessly the surface of it became ruffled interchangeable water on a lower floor wind, and then, like clouds, separated and eddyed smoothly. It looked like light made liquid or like wind made solid Harry couldnt run into up his mind.He wanted to touch it, to find out what it felt like, just nearly quadruple years experience of the magical world told him that sticking his hand into a bowl full of some unknown substance was a very stupid thing to do. He therefore pulled his wand out of the inside of his robes, cast a nervous look around the office, looked back at the contents of the basin, and prodded them. The surface of the silvery stuff inside the basin began to swirl very fast.Harry bent closer, his head right inside the cabinet. The silvery substance had become transp bent it looked like glass. He looked down into it expecting to see the s sprightliness bottom of the basin and saw instead an enormous room below the surface of the mysterious substance, a room into which he seemed to be looking through a circular window in the ceiling. The room was dimly lit he thought it might veritable(a) out be underground, for there were no windows, merely torches in brackets such as the ones that illuminated the walls of Hogwarts. Lowering his face so that his nose was a mere march away from the glassy substance, Harry saw that rows and rows of glamoures and wizards were seated around every wall on what seemed to be wor k benches rising in levels. An empty chair stood in the very center of the room. There was something about the chair that gave Harry an ominous feeling. Chains encircled the arms of it, as though its occupants were usually tied to it.Where was this military post? It surely wasnt Hogwarts he had never seen a room like that here in the castle. Moreover, the crowd in the mysterious room at the bottom of the basin was comprised of adults, and Harry knew there were not nearly that piece of musicy teachers at Hogwarts. They seemed, he thought, to be waiting for something even though he could all see the transcend of their hats, all of their faces seemed to be pointing in one direction, and none of them were talking to one another. The basin being circular, and the room he was observing square, Harry could not make out what was going on in the recessionals of it. He angle of diped even closer, tilting his head, trying to seeThe wind of his nose touched the strange substance into whic h he was staring.Dumbledores office gave an almighty lurch Harry was thrown forward and pitched headfirst into the substance inside the basin besides his head did not hit the stone bottom. He was falling through something icy-cold and black it was like being sucked into a dark whirlpool And suddenly, Harry found himself school term on a bench at the end of the room inside the basin, a bench raised high above the others. He looked up at the high stone ceiling, expecting to see the circular window through which he had just been staring, but there was nothing there but dark, solid stone.Breathing hard and fast. Harry looked around him. Not one of the witches and wizards in the room (and there were at least two hundred of them) was looking at him. Not one of them seemed to receive noticed that a tetradteen-year-old son had just dropped from the ceiling into their midst. Harry turned to the wizard next to him on the bench and uttered a loud cry of ramp that reverberated around th e silent room.He was sitting right next to Albus Dumbledore.Professor Harry said in a kind of strangled whisper. Im sorry I didnt correspond to I was just looking at that basin in your cabinet I where are we?But Dumbledore didnt work or speak. He ignored Harry completely. Like every other wizard on the benches, he was staring into the far corner of the room, where there was a door.Harry gazed, nonplussed, at Dumbledore, then around at the silently watchful crowd, then back at Dumbledore. And then it dawned on him.Once before. Harry had found himself somewhere that nobody could see or hear him. That time, he had fallen through a page in an enchanted diary, right into somebody elses memoryand unless he was very much mistaken, something of the sort had happened againHarry raised his right hand, hesitated, and then waved it energetically in from of Dumbledores face. Dumbledore did not blink, look around at Harry, or then move at all. And that, in Harrys opinion, settled the matte r. Dumbledore wouldnt ignore him like that. He was inside a memory, and this was not the present-day Dumbledore. Yet it couldnt be that long agothe Dumbledore sitting next to him now was silver-haired, just like the present-day Dumbledore. But what was this place? What were all these wizards waiting for?Harry looked around more carefully. The room, as he had venture when observing it from above, was approximately certainly underground more of a hold than a room, he thought. There was a bleak and forbidding air about the place there were no pictures on the walls, no decorations at all just these serried rows of benches, rising in levels all around the room, all positioned so that they had a clear view of that chair with the chains on its arms. Before Harry could reach any conclusions about the place in which they were, he heard footsteps. The door in the corner of the support opened and three people entered or at least one man, flanked by two dementors.Harrys insides went cold. The dementors tall, hooded creatures whose faces were concealed were go slowly toward the chair in the center of the room, each grasping one of the mans arms with their dead and rotten-looking hands. The man between them looked as though he was about to faint, and Harry couldnt blame himhe knew the dementors could not touch him inside a memory, but he remembered their power only too well. The watching crowd recoiled pretty as the dementors placed the man in the chained chair and glided back out of the room. The door swung shut behind them.Harry looked down at the man now sitting in the chair and saw that it was Karkaroff.Unlike Dumbledore, Karkaroff looked much younger his hair and goatee were black. He was not dressed in sleek furs, but in thin and ragged robes. He was vibration. Even as Harry watched, the chains on the arms of the chair glowed suddenly gold and snaked their way up Karkaroffs arms, binding him there.Igor Karkaroff, said a curt voice to Harrys left. Harry looke d around and saw Mr. flex standing up in the middle of the bench beside him. Crouchs hair was dark, his face was much less lined, he looked fit and alert. You have been brought from Azkaban to present evidence to the Ministry of Magic. You have given us to understand that you have important study for us.Karkaroff straightened himself as best he could, tightly bound to the chair.I have, sir, he said, and although his voice was very scared, Harry could still hear the familiar unctuous bloodline in it. I wish to be of use to the Ministry. I wish to help. I I know that the Ministry is trying to to round up the last of the juicy sea captains supporters. I am eager to assist in any way I can. There was a murmur around the benches. Some of the wizards and witches were analyze Karkaroff with interest, others with pronounced mistrust. whence Harry heard, quite distinctly, from Dumbledores other side, a familiar, growling voice saying, Filth.Harry leaned forward so that he could see p ast Dumbledore. Mad-Eye Moody was sitting there except that there was a very noticeable difference in his appearance. He did not have his magical eye, but two normal ones. Both were looking down upon Karkaroff, and both were narrowed in intense dislike.Crouch is going to let him out, Moody breathed quietly to Dumbledore. Hes make a deal with him. Took me six months to track him down, and Crouch is going to let him go if hes got enough new names. Lets hear his information, I say, and throw him straight back to the dementors.Dumbledore made a small noise of dissent through his long, crooked nose.Ah, I was forgettingyou dont like the dementors, do you, Albus? said Moody with a sardonic smile. No, said Dumbledore calmly, Im afraid I dont. I have long felt the Ministry is wrong to ally itself with such creatures. But for filth like this Moody said softly. You say you have names for us, Karkaroff, said Mr. Crouch. Let us hear them, please. You must understand, said Karkaroff hurriedly, that He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named operated always in the greatest secrecy. He preferred that we I mean to say, his supporters and I regret now, very qabalisticly, that I ever counted myself among them -Get on with it, sneered Moody.- we never knew the names of every one of our fellows He but knew exactly who we all were -Which was a wise move, wasnt it, as it prevented individual like you, Karkaroff, from turning all of them in, muttered Moody.Yet you say you have some names for us? said Mr. Crouch.I I do, said Karkaroff breathlessly. And these were important supporters, mark you. People I saw with my own eyes doing his bidding. I give this information as a home that I fully and totally renounce him, and am filled with a remorse so deep I can barely -These names are? said Mr. Crouch sharply.Karkaroff drew a deep breath. There was Antonin Dolohov, he said. I I saw him torture countless Muggles and and non-supporters of the Dark Lord. And helped him do it, murmured Moody. We have alread y apprehended Dolohov, said Crouch. He was caught shortly afterward yourself.Indeed? said Karkaroff, his eyes widening. I I am delighted to hear itBut he didnt look it. Harry could tell that this news had come as a real blow to him. One of his names was worthless.Any others? said Crouch coldly. Why, yesthere was Rosier, said Karkaroff hurriedly. Evan Rosier.Rosier is dead, said Crouch. He was caught shortly after you were too. He preferred to fight rather than come quietly and was killed in the struggle.Took a deed of me with him, though, whispered Moody to Harrys right. Harry looked around at him once more, and saw him indicating the large chunk out of his nose to Dumbledore. No no more than Rosier merit said Karkaroff, a real note of panic in his voice now. Harry could see that he was starting to worry that none of his information would be of any use to the Ministry. Karkaroffs eyes darted toward the door in the corner, behind which the dementors undoubtedly still stood, waitin g.Any more? said Crouch.Yes said Karkaroff. There was Travers he helped mop up the McKinnons Mulciber he specialized in the Imperius Curse, forced countless people to do horrific things Rookwood, who was a spy, and passed He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named useful information from inside the Ministry itselfHarry could tell that, this time, Karkaroff had infatuated gold. The watching crowd was all murmuring together.Rookwood? said Mr. Crouch, nodding to a witch sitting in front of him, who began scribbling upon her piece of parchment. Augustus Rookwood of the Department of Mysteries? The very same, said Karkaroff eagerly. I believe he used a network of well-placed wizards, both inside the Ministry and out, to collect information -But Travers and Mulciber we have, said Mr. Crouch. Very well, Karkaroff, if that is all, you will be returned to Azkaban while we decide -Not yet cried Karkaroff, looking quite desperate. Wait, I have moreHarry could see him sweating in the torchlight, his white sc rape contrasting strongly with the black of his hair and beard.Snape he shouted. Severus SnapeSnape has been cleared by this council, said Crouch disdainfully. He has been vouched for by Albus Dumbledore. No shouted Karkaroff, straining at the chains that bound him to the chair. I assure you Severus Snape is a Death EaterDumbledore had gotten to his feet.I have given evidence already on this matter, he said calmly. Severus Snape was indeed a Death Eater. However, he rejoined our side before Lord Voldemorts downfall and turned spy for us, at great soulal risk. He is now no more a Death Eater than I am.Harry turned to look at Mad-Eye Moody. He was wearing a look of deep s unploughedicism behind Dumbledores back.Very well, Karkaroff, Crouch said coldly, you have been of assistance. I shall review your case. You will return to Azkaban in the meantime.Mr. Crouchs voice faded. Harry looked around the dungeon was dissolving as though it were made of smoke everything was fading he could see only his own body all else was swirling darkness. And then, the dungeon returned. Harry was sitting in a antithetical seat, still on the highest bench, but now to the left side of Mr. Crouch. The atmosphere seemed quite different relaxed, even cheerful. The witches and wizards all around the walls were talking to one another, almost as though they were at some sort of sporting event. Harry noticed a witch halfway up the rows of benches opposite. She had short blonde hair, was wearing magenta robes, and was sucking the end of an acid-green quill. It was, unmistakably, a younger Rita Skeeter. Harry looked around Dumbledore was sitting beside him again, wearing different robes. Mr. Crouch looked more tired and somehow fiercer, gaunter.Harry understood. It was a different memory, a different daya different trial. The door in the corner opened, and Ludo traveling salesman walked into the room. This was not, however, a Ludo road mender gone to seed, but a Ludo Bagman who was clearly at the height of his Quidditch-playing fitness. His nose wasnt broken now he was tall and lean and muscular. Bagman looked nervous as he sat down in the chained chair, but it did not bind him there as it had bound Karkaroff, and Bagman, perhaps taking heart from this, glanced around at the watching crowd, waved at a couple of them, and managed a small smile.Ludo Bagman, you have been brought here in front of the Council of charming Law to answer charges relating to the activities of the Death Eaters, said Mr. Crouch. We have heard the evidence against you, and are about to reach our verdict. Do you have anything to add to your testimony before we pronounce judgment?Harry couldnt believe his ears. Ludo Bagman, a Death Eater?Only, said Bagman, smiling awkwardly, well I know Ive been a bit of an dimwit -One or two wizards and witches in the surrounding set smiled indulgently. Mr. Crouch did not appear to share their feelings. He was staring down at Ludo Bagman with an expression of the utmost severity and dislike. You never spoke a truer word, boy, someone muttered dryly to Dumbledore behind Harry. He looked around and saw Moody sitting there again. If I didnt know hed always been dim, Id have said some of those Bludgers had permanently affected his brain.Ludovic Bagman, you were caught passing information to Lord Voldemorts supporters, said Mr. Crouch. For this, I conjure up a term of imprisonment in Azkaban lasting no less than -But there was an angry outcry from the surrounding benches. Several of the witches and wizards around the walls stood up, shaking their heads, and even their fists, at Mr. Crouch. But Ive told you, I had no idea Bagman called earnestly over the crowds babble, his round blue eyes widening. None at all Old Rookwood was a friend of my dadsnever crossed my mind he was in with You-Know-Who I thought I was collecting information for our side And Rookwood kept talking about getting me a job in the Ministry later ononce my Quidditch days are ove r, you knowI mean, I cant take for getting hit by Bludgers for the rest of my life, can I?There were titters from the crowd. It will be put to the vote, said Mr. Crouch coldly. He turned to the right side of the dungeon. The jury will please raise their handsthose in favor of imprisonmentHarry looked toward the right-hand side of the dungeon. Not one person raised their hand. Many of the witches and wizards around the walls began to clap. One of the witches on the jury stood up.Yes? barked Crouch.Wed just like to congratulate Mr. Bagman on his splendid performance for England in the Quidditch mate against Turkey last Saturday, the witch said breathlessly.Mr. Crouch looked furious. The dungeon was ringing with applause now. Bagman got to his feet and bowed, beaming.Despicable, Mr. Crouch spat at Dumbledore, sitting down as Bagman walked out of the dungeon. Rookwood get him a job indeed. The day Ludo Bagman joins us will be a sad day indeed for the Ministry. And the dungeon dissolved again. When it had returned, Harry looked around. He and Dumbledore were still sitting beside Mr. Crouch, but the atmosphere could not have been more different. There was total silence, broken only by the dry sobs of a frail, wispy-looking witch in the seat next to Mr. Crouch. She was clutching a handkerchief to her mouth with trembling hands.Harry looked up at Crouch and saw that he looked gaunter and grayer than ever before. A nerve was twitching in his temple.Bring them in, he said, and his voice echoed through the silent dungeon. The door in the corner opened yet again. Six dementors entered this time, flanking a group of four people. Harry saw the people in the crowd turn to look up at Mr. Crouch. A few of them whispered to one another. The dementors placed each of the four people in the four chairs with chained arms that now stood on the dungeon floor. There was a thickset man who stared blankly up at Crouch a thinner and more nervous-looking man, whose eyes were darting around the crowd a woman with thick, shining dark hair and heavily hooded eyes, who was sitting in the chained chair as though it were a throne and a boy in his late teens, who looked nothing short of petrified. He was shivering, his straw-colored hair all over his face, his freckled skin milk-white. The wispy little witch beside Crouch began to agitate retracted and forward in her seat, whimpering into her handkerchief.Crouch stood up. He looked down upon the four in front of him, and there was pure hatred in his face. You have been brought here before the Council of Magical Law, he said clearly, so that we may pass judgment on you, for a crime so heinous -Father, said the boy with the straw-colored hair. Fatherplease- that we have rarely heard the like of it within this court, said Crouch, speaking more loudly, drowning out his sons voice. We have heard the evidence against you. The four of you stand accused of capturing an Auror Frank Longbottom and subjecting him to the Cruciatus Cur se, believing him to have knowledge of the present whereabouts of your exiled master, He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named -Father, I didnt shrieked the boy in chains below. I didnt, I depone it. Father, dont send me back to the dementors -You are further accused, bellowed Mr. Crouch, of using the Cruciatus Curse on Frank Longbottoms wife, when he would not give you information. You planned to restore He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named to power, and to resume the lives of effect you presumably led while he was strong. I now ask the jury -Mother screamed the boy below, and the wispy little witch beside Crouch began to sob, rocking backward and forward. Mother, stop him. Mother, I didnt do it, it wasnt meI now ask the jury, shouted Mr. Crouch, to raise their hands if they believe, as I do, that these crimes deserve a life blame in AzkabanIn unison, the witches and wizards along the right-hand side of the dungeon raised their hands. The crowd around the walls began to clap as it had for Bagman, their fac es full of savage triumph. The boy began to scream. No Mother, no I didnt do it, I didnt do it, I didnt know Dont send me there, dont let himThe dementors were gliding back into the room. The boys three companions rose quietly from their seats the woman with the heavy-lidded eyes looked up at Crouch and called, The Dark Lord will rise again, Crouch Throw us into Azkaban we will wait He will rise again and will come for us, he will reward us beyond any of his other supporters We alone were faithful We alone tried to find himBut the boy was trying to fight off the dementors, even though Harry could see their cold, draining power starting to affect him. The crowd was jeering, some of them on their feet, as the woman swept out of the dungeon, and the boy continued to struggle.Im your son he screamed up at Crouch. Im your sonYou are no son of mine bellowed Mr. Crouch, his eyes bulging suddenly. I have no sonThe wispy witch beside him gave a great gasp and slumped in her seat. She had fain ted. Crouch appeared not to have noticed.Take them away Crouch roared at the dementors, spit flying from his mouth. Take them away, and may they rot thereFather Father, I wasnt involved No No Father, pleaseI think. Harry, it is time to return to my office, said a quiet voice in Harrys ear.Harry started. He looked around. Then he looked on his other side. There was an Albus Dumbledore sitting on his right, watching Crouchs son being dragged away by the dementors and there was an Albus Dumbledore on his left, looking right at him.Come, said the Dumbledore on his left, and he put his hand under Harrys elbow. Harry felt himself rising into the air the dungeon dissolved around him for a moment, all was blackness, and then he felt as though he had done a slow-motion somersault, suddenly landing flat on his feet, in what seemed like the dazzling light of Dumbledores sunlit office. The stone basin was shimmering in the cabinet in front of him, and Albus Dumbledore was standing beside him.Pr ofessor, Harry gasped, I know I shouldntve I didnt mean the cabinet door was sort of open and -I quite understand, said Dumbledore. He lifted the basin, carried it over to his desk, placed it upon the polished top, and sat down in the chair behind it. He motioned for Harry to sit down opposite him.Harry did so, staring at the stone basin. The contents had returned to their original, silvery-white state, swirling and rippling beneath his gaze. What is it? Harry asked shakily. This? It is called a Pensieve, said Dumbledore. I sometimes find, and I am sure you know the feeling, that I simply have too many thoughts and memories crammed into my mind.Er, said Harry, who couldnt truthfully say that he had ever felt anything of the sort.At these times, said Dumbledore, indicating the stone basin, I use the Pensieve. One simply siphons the excess thoughts from ones mind, pours them into the basin, and examines them at ones leisure. It becomes easier to military post patterns and links, you understand, when they are in this form. You meanthat stuffs your thoughts? Harry said, staring at the swirling white substance in the basin.Certainly, said Dumbledore. Let me show you.Dumbledore drew his wand out of the inside of his robes and placed the tip into his own silvery hair, near his temple. When he took the wand away, hair seemed to be clinging to it but then Harry saw that it was in fact a glistening strand of the same strange silvery-white substance that filled the Pensieve. Dumbledore added this fresh thought to the basin, and Harry, astonished, saw his own face swimming around the surface of the bowl. Dumbledore placed his long hands on either side of the Pensieve and swirled it, rather as a gold prospector would pan for fragments of gold.and Harry saw his own face change smoothly into Snapes, who opened his mouth and spoke to the ceiling, his voice echoing slightly. Its coming backKarkaroffs toostronger and clearer than everA association I could have made without ass istance, Dumbledore sighed, but never mind. He peered over the top of his half-moon spectacles at Harry, who was gaping at Snapes face, which was continuing to swirl around the bowl. I was using the Pensieve when Mr. Fudge arrived for our meeting and put it away rather hastily. Undoubtedly I did not fasten the cabinet door properly. Naturally, it would have attracted your attention.Im sorry, Harry mumbled.Dumbledore shook his head. Curiosity is not a sin, he said. But we should exercise caution with our curiosityyes, indeedFrowning slightly, he prodded the thoughts within the basin with the tip of his wand. Instantly, a figure rose out of it, a plump, scowling girl of about sixteen, who began to revolve slowly, with her feet still in the basin. She took no notice any(prenominal) of Harry or Professor Dumbledore. When she spoke, her voice echoed as Snapes had done, as though it were coming from the depths of the stone basin. He put a hex on me, Professor Dumbledore, and I was only te asing him, sir, I only said Id seen him kissing Florence behind the greenhouses last Thursday. But why. Bertha, said Dumbledore sadly, looking up at the now silently revolving girl, why did you have to follow him in the first place?Bertha? Harry whispered, looking up at her. Is that was that Bertha Jorkins?Yes, said Dumbledore, prodding the thoughts in the basin again Bertha sank back into them, and they became silvery and opaque once more. That was Bertha as I remember her at school. The silvery light from the Pensieve illuminated Dumbledores face, and it struck Harry suddenly how very old he was looking. He knew, of course, that Dumbledore was getting on in years, but somehow he never really thought of Dumbledore as an old man.So, Harry, said Dumbledore quietly. Before you got lost in my thoughts, you wanted to tell me something.Yes, said Harry. Professor I was in Divination just now, and er I fell asleep. He hesitated here, wondering if a reprimand was coming, but Dumbledore mer ely said, Quite understandable. Continue.Well, I had a dream, said Harry. A dream about Lord Voldemort. He was torturing Wormtailyou know who Wormtail-I do know, said Dumbledore promptly. Please continue.Voldemort got a letter from an owl. He said something like, Wormtails blunder had been repaired. He said someone was dead. Then he said, Wormtail wouldnt be fed to the snake there was a snake beside his chair. He said he said hed be feeding me to it, instead. Then he did the Cruciatus Curse on Wormtail and my scar hurt, Harry said. It woke me up, it hurt so badly.Dumbledore merely looked at him.Er thats all, said Harry.I see, said Dumbledore quietly. I see. Now, has your scar hurt at any other time this year, excepting the time it woke you up over the summer? No, I how did you know it woke me up over the summer? said Harry, astonished. You are not Siriuss only correspondent, said Dumbledore. I have also been in contact with him ever since he left Hogwarts last year. It was I who suggested the mountainside cave as the safest place for him to stay.Dumbledore got up and began walking up and down behind his desk. Every now and then, he placed his wand tip to his temple, take another shining silver thought, and added it to the Pensieve. The thoughts inside began to swirl so fast that Harry couldnt make out anything clearly It was merely a blur of color.Professor? he said quietly, after a couple of minutes.Dumbledore stopped pacing and looked at Harry. My apologies, he said quietly. He sat back down at his desk.Dyou dyou know why my scars hurting me?Dumbledore looked very intently at Harry for a moment, and then said, I have a theory, no more than that.It is my legal opinion that your scar hurts both when Lord Voldemort is near you, and when he is feeling a particularly strong surge of hatred.Butwhy?Because you and he are connected by the curse that failed, said Dumbledore. That is no ordinary scar.So you thinkthat dreamdid it really happen? It is possible, sai d Dumbledore. I would say probable. Harry did you see Voldemort? No, said Harry. Just the back of his chair. But there wouldnt have been anything to see, would there? I mean, he hasnt got a body, has he? Butbut then how could he have held the wand? Harry said slowly. How indeed? muttered Dumbledore. How indeedNeither Dumbledore nor Harry spoke for a while. Dumbledore was gazing across the room, and, every now and then, placing his wand tip to his temple and adding another shining silver thought to the seething mass within the Pensieve.Professor, Harry said at last, do you think hes getting stronger?Voldemort? said Dumbledore, looking at Harry over the Pensieve. It was the characteristic, piercing look Dumbledore had given him on other occasions, and always made Harry feel as though Dumbledore were seeing right through him in a way that even Moodys magical eye could not. Once again. Harry, I can only give you my suspicions.Dumbledore sighed again, and he looked older, and wearier, t han ever. The years of Voldemorts ascent to power, he said, were marked with disappearances. Bertha Jorkins has vanished without a trace in the place where Voldemort was certainly known to be last. Mr. Crouch too has disappearedwithin these very grounds. And there was a third disappearance, one which the Ministry, I regret to say, do not consider of any importance, for it concerns a Muggle. His name was Frank Bryce, he lived in the village where Voldemorts father grew up, and he has not been seen since last August. You see, I read the Muggle newspapers, unlike most of my Ministry friends.Dumbledore looked very seriously at Harry. These disappearances seem to me to be linked. The Ministry disagrees as you may have heard, while waiting outside my office.Harry nodded. Silence fell between them again, Dumbledore extracting thoughts every now and then. Harry felt as though he ought to go, but his curiosity held him in his chair.Professor? he said again.Yes, Harry? said Dumbledore.Ercould I ask you aboutthat court thing I was inin the Pensieve? You could, said Dumbledore heavily. I attended it many times, but some trials come back to me more clearly than othersparticularly now.You know you know the trial you found me in? The one with Crouchs son? Well.were they talking about Nevilles parents?Dumbledore gave Harry a very sharp look. Has Neville never told you why he has been brought up by his grandmother? he said.Harry shook his head, wondering, as he did so, how he could have failed to ask Neville this, in almost four years of knowing him.Yes, they were talking about Nevilles parents, said Dumbledore. His father, Frank, was an Auror just like Professor Moody. He and his wife were tortured for information about Voldemorts whereabouts after he lost his powers, as you heard. So theyre dead? said Harry quietly. No, said Dumbledore, his voice full of a bitterness Harry had never heard there before. They are insane. They are both in St. Mungos Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries. I believe Neville visits them, with his grandmother, during the holidays. They do not recognize him.Harry sat there, horror-struck. He had never knownnever, in four years, bothered to find outThe Longbottoms were very popular, said Dumbledore. The attacks on them came after Voldemorts fall from power, just when everyone thought they were safe. Those attacks caused a wave of fury such as I have never known. The Ministry was under great pressure to catch those who had done it. Unfortunately, the Longbottoms evidence was given their stipulate none too reliable. Then Mr. Crouchs son might not have been involved? said Harry slowly.Dumbledore shook his head.As to that, I have no idea.Harry sat in silence once more, watching the contents of the Pensieve swirl. There were two more questions he was burning to askbut they touch the guilt of living people.Er, he said, Mr. Bagman.has never been accused of any Dark activity since, said Dumbledore calmly.Right, said Harry hastily , staring at the contents of the Pensieve again, which were swirling more slowly now that Dumbledore had stopped adding thoughts. AnderBut the Pensieve seemed to be asking his question for him.Snapes face was swimming on the surface again. Dumbledore glanced down into it, and then up at Harry. No more has Professor Snape, he said.Harry looked into Dumbledores light blue eyes, and the thing he really wanted to know spilled out of his mouth before he could stop it.What made you think hed really stopped supporting Voldemort, Professor?Dumbledore held Harrys gaze for a few seconds, and then said, That, Harry, is a matter between Professor Snape and myself.Harry knew that the interview was over Dumbledore did not look angry, yet there was a finality in his tone that told Harry it was time to go. He stood up, and so did Dumbledore.Harry, he said as Harry reached the door. Please do not speak about Nevilles parents to anybody else. He has the right to let people know, when he is ready.Yes, Professor, said Harry, turning to go.And-Harry looked back. Dumbledore was standing over the Pensieve, his face lit from beneath by its silvery spots of light, looking older than ever. He stared at Harry for a moment, and then said, Good luck with the third task.
